There have been tons of research on why people participate in OSS, now
for something new in that field.

What about something that explores the tendency to avoid new paradigms
and finds ways to motivate people to try out new technologies in the
context of software development? Our primary example is stuff like AOP,
DDD and DI - we have been talking about this for years by now, and it
really slowly took off. "Smaller" changes are readily accepted, even if
they actually are ore complex, it seems.
