I tried to reach the phpinfo() page but didn't succeed either.

My next suggestion would be to create a file named test.php with the 
following content:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
and upload that to your webspace.

But that's also no solution, it only helps to debug a little further.

In general I'd say skip all this hassle by just moving to another 
hosting company like http://www.typo3server.com/114.0.html or one from 
the list 
http://typo3.org/1301.0.html?&no_cache=1&tx_t3consultancies_pi1[service]=2
For free testing I can recommend freetypo3.com!
