[Typo3-UG UK] access constants in typoscript

hi list, 
i want to set a typoscript constant from within an extension so i called 
  *PHP:*   
<?php 
t3lib_extMgm::addTypoScript('tstat','constants',"s = .$sSprt"); 
?> 
 
   

i can see the that line in [FE][defaultTypoScript_constants] but i seem to 
have problems getting this onto my page. 

i tried typoscript like the following: 
  *Code:*  
page.20 = TEXT 
page.20.value = asdf asdf s {$s} 
  
and some variations. 

what am i doing wrong here?
