Hi,

in my opinion this would be a reasonable approch.
It is definatly better than just having four states, but it would not be  
too much information.
The problem ist that experienced user what much more information the new  
users as they already know what each icon is about.
Still it seem a good compromise to me.

Additionally I would appreciate an autogeneration of overlays. This way it  
would (or could) also be consistent in extentions as the author just has  
to include the basic states and not all possible overlays. Maybe it could  
be optional as a fallback which would lead to (I'am not sure if is not  
already done this way):

1. is there an icon with all overlays? --> use it
2. are there generation capabilities? --> generate overlayed icon
3. just put icon as there are no other possibilities
