Hi,

i got quite deep into that matter over the past months and i have a few
proposals for that. But to cut it in short - use ACE :)
I wrote enthusiastic about it already - the good thing about is the
fact, that you can use your classes almost *as is* without modifying
the way data is returned. Once set up and used to it its extremly
straight forward.

ACE along with a demo can be found here:

www.pistenliste.de/fileadmin/ACE.zip

Pros:
- Simple (make a complete interaction with 3 lines of code)
- llightweight (less than 20k)
- classes without modifications usable, native and transparent exchange
of arrays and objects numbers and strings between js and php
- adds JS 1.5 compatibility for 1.2 browsers
- includes a JS serializer that creates php serializer compatible output
- very clean programming style, suits the high coding standards inside typo3

Cons:
- No other functions for forms or xml data - its coming *as is*.

I could assist in finding lightweight and reusable functions to deal
with ajax if you´re interested - personally i do not like prototype and
many of the other ajax libraries that became way too fat to my opinion.
