Today()- 5 years = 2002
There was no Extension Manager at that time... ;)
Also, Kasper never took any class into OO programming (me neither...)
and in 2002 he was the friendly ghost almost always alone in his
basement doing code that he was not sure would be seen.

You had to see Robert's face when a french guy (I forgot the name) gave
a speech on Design Patterns in January 2004 at T3BOARD... AFAIK, it was
the spark that ignite 5.0 before anyone realized how important this
informal speech has changed the way TYPO3 will become.
