As much as I read TYPO3 4.2 will have a rewritten AJAX form wizard, see:
http://wiki.typo3.org/index.php/4.2_Development

There also seem to be some interests by the core team to completely 
rewrite the FORM CObject - at least it's mentioned in the brainstorming 
ideas. Maybe the ECT could push that feature on the active roadmap for 4.2.
