Hmm, it is heigher in mine and in ben's installation. perhaps the 
setting is overridden again?
$GLOBALS['T3_VAR']['ext']['dam']['TCA']['category_config'] is defined in 
  tca_media_field.php, and this is where I made the change myself. Not 
sure about the inclusion order right now.

autoSizeMax only applies to the field with the selected items, so it is 
of no help for the category tree.
