According to the commit message, this issue was solved as a [BUGFIX] but
only for Releases: 6.2 [1]

However the patch introduces new public API (functions, exception,
class). This is rather uncommon.

It's seems rather impossible to backport this "bugfix" to 6.1. Can
anyone help on this?

Otherwise the commit should be changed to [FEATURE].
