For what it's worth,

I am using pan2 now,
very low memory footprint and currently consumes around 10MB.
It's very easy to install on OSX if you have ports installed. I believe
there are also windows versions.

I must admit, I don't use it to often, so I don't know what
features it's missing  (appart from a very large memory footprint and  
bugs hehehe compared to thunderbird)
for some of the people here. However, it seems to feel snappy.
