What about
/usr/bin/convert -version

does even this output change?
I guess we can rely on this and create a fallback mode for certain cases.

This could be done by community. We could set up a version<->settings
table in the wiki, where users can share their experience and other give
+1 for confirmation. Then we use the result for autodetection.

So only one more step to go. I strongly dislike these gazillions of GFX
settings in the install tool. Even with thousands of installations done
I still did not understand the meaning of most GFX settings. Two
settings should be enough for a basic installation: 1) IM or GM 2) version.
