But might it be considerable anyway?
Is it possible to just change it for the core
and leave extensions as they are?

Personally I've never needed to use dates beyond 2020,
but there might be usecases were this was needed.
(E.g. extension 'cal' stores the dates as formatted string (or 
int?)'20091024').
