Well, I finally got it running, but this is what I had to set:

$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['GFX']['gdlib_png'] = 1;

!!

Which generates PNGs only, no GIFs,
but at least it works. What's still weird,
is the image test '3: Scaling images - PNG to PNG, 150 pixels wide',
which resulst in a file 35K compared to the reference 6K.

Wondering how to compress the PNG file?
