And for those with limited funds there are always the monthly bugdays. 
Besides getting things fixed, getting RFCs tested you can always 
"promote" a few bugs and see if anybody likes to fix it.

Even if you have no programming skills you can always participate by 
evaluating bug reports and see if they are still valid (for old reports) 
or user errors or ...
