I have the same problem. Someone knows a solution?

I've had a look in ext. tx_news how this popular extensions solves this, but this extension has not one "l10n_mode=exclude". All settings are editable in the language records, which is not really nice. But perhaps tx_news solves it this way because there is no other...?

If I use custom queries ($query->statement($statement)) and build the queries myself (and query only the default language) it works as expected, TYPO3 takes the desired records from the default language and then makes the language overlay.
