It is a well know problem. Extbase BE modules are more of a hack 
(originally) than a well though solution.
AFAIK the core already has a default TS record (6.0-dev that takes core of 
not crashing the the BE if no record is found.

I think the extbase BE handling will be further improved for 6.1 including 
BE viewhelpers, etc - mind that somebody still has to do the work.
