sorry, but isn't that done this way yet? AFAIK the dataMapper checks for 
a type field and is resolving the correct STI class for the current row 
and maps it. Or did I get something wrong here?
I suppose you have set up the STI configuration correctly and also 
defined the type field in TCA?
