Back to your first question: IMO categories are more like a pagetree. 
They define a structure of content rather than content itself. Let's 
take your sentence "So you can put news, events, pages or anything else 
into a category" and alter it to "So you can put news, events, pages or 
anything else on a page".

So we have to provide support for _structures_ (categories, timeline, 
pagetree).
