[TYPO3-ttnews] Extended news search

I'm in need to extend default tt_news search, and I was wondering what
would be the best approach to this task.

I'm going to filter news on different parameters, so I need more than the
standard text input box (news are to be filtered on date, and several other
custom fields). I already created a new extension with the required fields,
following the hook approach described in the tt_news documentation. 

What sould I do to create a search facility? Should I create a new
extension, or is there a better solution?
