I just looked into the code where the notification mails (sent to the 
organizer upon user registration for an event) are being compiled: These 
messages have the attende's mail address in the from: line.

Is it possible that your FE user has no email address stored?

Or are you talking about the confirmation mails that are sent to the 
attendee after successful registration? Those have the email address of 
the organizer in from:.

Please check that both the organizer record for this event and the 
frontend user account have a proper mail address. And please report here 
whether this solved your issue.
