why don't you follow the TYPO3 suggestion

Target for internal links
[PAGE_TARGET]
     Should match the name of the content PAGE-object in TypoScript when used 
with frames. Most cases: set to "" (empty). If you have frames in the template 
set to "page"

I set it empty and it works great (without any target attribut), you don't need 
any target attribut at all if you wish to open in same window. Above all the 
target attribut is invalid in xhtml 1.0 strict.

Found another possibility to configure the target for typolinks
config.intTarget =
in TS-template setup
