A would call the current state of the Sphinx documenation still alpha. 
Interfaces are volatile in this state.

To keep legacy code in such an early state, only for backwards compatibility
is a bad idea for me. 

Ones having a satisfying userfriendly interface  call the project BETA and 
then cling to it.
