That doesn't look so bad indeed.

Or we could say that "double" locales like "fr_FR" are replaced by just 
"fr".

As long as it does not complicate matters exaggeratedly I would prefer 
continuing with default segment to keep URLs as short as possible. But 
of course it's ok if we can type a URL without language segment and then 
get redirected (which I guess is what you meant).
