a) Jan-Hendrik did something like that, some ages ago for a T3board 
DAM-image-Site; you should contact him (guess he still has the code 
somewhere): jh2010 AT ivi-solutions DOT com

b) is'nt it that dam_frontend or air_filemanager provide some similar 
functionality?
