[TYPO3-dam] How to create references?

Well, I have now experimented with dam_filelinks + css_styled_filelinks, 
but that did not turn out nicely, since all my OLD filelinks got borked 
(the ones pointing to upload/media). Now I have also discovered 
dam_frontend. This seems pretty nice, however, I cannot grasp how to 
configure its rendering. I don't want all the bells and whistles. I only 
want: 1) an icon showing the file type 2) the file name 3) the file size.

Anybody got some pointers? Meanwhile, I'll continue to try to understand 
the documentation. :)
