I assume you have no shell access to your server. So you have to check it out locally and upload it via FTP.

Are you running Windows? Use TortoiseSVN from http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org - install it , create a directory and select "Checkout repository". Enter URL https://svn.typo3.org/TYPO3v4/Extensions/dam/dam/trunk/
Then you should see Tortoise downloading the repository. Just copy this directory to your webserver, reinstall dam (needed?) and you should be happy.

If you are running linux, install subversion, run 
svn co https://svn.typo3.org/TYPO3v4/Extensions/dam/dam/trunk/ AN_EMPTY_DIRECTORY and then upload the contents of AN_EMPTY_DIRECTORY.

Do the same again for dam_index with repository URL https://svn.typo3.org/TYPO3v4/Extensions/dam/dam_index/trunk/

If you can't get it managed, just answer back what you tried and what didn't succeed.
