[TYPO3-dam] Media types and file types

Dear DAM gurus,

I need some enlightenment on how DAM deals with media types.

DAM has certain predifined media types (Undefined, Text, Image, Audio,
Video, Interactive, Service, Font, Model, Dataset, Collection, Software,
Application).

Now, when I add a new file type that has not yet been present, it gets
automatically inserted into tx_dam_metypes_avail. During this process
one of the above mentioned media types is assigned to the new file type,
so there must be some preconfiguration. Which file type will end up
under which category is not documented yet, and I would do so if I knew
the answers to the following two questions.

1) Where in the code can I find out which file type will end up under
which main media type?

2) Is there a way to change that preconfiguration?

Also I would like to know whether the following statements are correct:

The only way to add or edit media types is the list module.
If you want to change the parent media type of a file type (e.g. move
.psd from Undefined to Image) you can do it there.

Prosit, Uschi
