Btw this seems to be a windows only problem.
As i set up a testsystem on my windows laptop with apache/php/mysql
i got the same error. But i did not search for the reason because
the system was not yet configured to my needs. and when i returned
to this point it worked flawlessly.
Perhaps to try to activate the ext again and fiddle around a bit with
php.ini. 
Would be nice to hear if you get the ext running. and what you did :)
