[TYPO3-dam] display categories in fe

Hi,

I'm trying to find a way to display my categories in FE. Is there a TS 
way available to get them as a *MENU? Or any API call that I can use in 
my own ext to handle them for further output in FE?

I've tried to browse thru the sources some and googled a lot on it my I 
can't find much. Can't find a customizable ext either for that purpose.

Any advice is most welcome.
