Just in case you want to learn by doing: I suggest you create some HTML 
generating code. I recall that the extension code does the trick by 
maniplating (string replaces) a fully generated menu. IMHO this is ugly 
and error prone.

As a starting point I suggest you dig into tslib_menu :-)
