I know this guidelines/"rules" - but where is the difference of a 
linearized image-table to some nested div/dl-rendering? As long as the 
caption is in the same TD as the image it should be the same.

I fully agree that it is absolutely nonsens to put e.g. "text with 
image" into extremly nested tables (as it is default) - as long as there 
is only one row or column of images. But when you have a grid of images 
- I think they are better handled with a table.
