[TYPO3-commerce] Display of attribute icons

Hello list readers,

a while back I submitted a request and patch which made it 
possible to display the icons of attributes:

My client's installation has been working for over 2 years 
nicely with this addition but now it's time to catch up again 
and update Commerce to it's latest version.

As far as I can see there has been no changes in the code 
(0.12.4) to retrieve the icon from the attribute and use it in 
the product template.

My question: is a change of code necessary to get the icon or 
can it be done in another way without code changes?
