[TYPO3-commerce] How can I replace the checkout-steps text with graphic

sorry, perhaps I was too quick there.
What I should have said:
if you want the texts to become images, change them in the local_lang, you can 
use html in there, fe:
   label_step_billing  = <img src="billing_step.gif">

If you want backgrounds: change the default template 
(pi3/template_checkout.tpl), add css classes and style them in the css.
You are right: by default there are no classes associated the steps.
