[TYPO3-commerce] How to show subcategories instead of products

Hello,

Maybe someone has an idea how to implement this:

The categories should always show the related products of the current  
category. If there are no products for the current category, the  
frontend should show the subcategories with title, images etc., if  
subcategories are available.

Do I have to use a hook for this (is there a suitable?), which checks  
the current catUID for subcats or is there already a feature which  
provides this? Or may typoscript be a fair solution?
