Hey Ingmar,

just my two cents:

For new installations I'd love it. I would really like to see an 
automatic check in the background in the 1-2-3 installer (maybe through 
a similar hook at the end of step 3 that I'd like to see for the 
Distribution concept :) where extensions can hook in) that checks if the 
PHP extension is enabled.
