[Typo3-install] Install problems ion Mac OS X

I followed all the steps in the document "Instalilng TYPO3 on Mac OS
X" but unfortunately couldn't get Typo3 up and running:

- Mac OS X 10.3.x
- MySQL 4.1.14
  + MySQL user "typo3" with password "secret" can use DB "typo3db" if 
    using the command line "/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql -u typo3 -p"

- Typo3 "quickstart-3.8.0.zip" unzipped in "/Library/WebServer/Documents" 
- chrp/chmod according to document done
- commente out "die()" in ".../typo3/install/index.php"
- web-browser pointing at "http://127.0.0.1/quickstart-3.8.0/" 
  displays step 1 page of the 1-2-3 install tool

  After filling in "typo3" as Username, "secret" as Password, 
  "localhost" in the Host field, and pressing "Update localconf.php" I
  get:

  There is no connection to the database!
  (username: typo3, Password: secret, Host: localhost)

  Go to step 1 and enter a proper username/password


  Note: if using "mysql" on the command line the username/password 
        combination can connect successfully!

Any hints?
