Well, you mastered the first step: Get in touch with the community :)

Next up: familiarize yourself with the project and its documentation

I suggest to play around a little and just try out a few things, to get a 
general feeling of the software involved.
If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask the the projects newsgroups or 
the irc chat (freenode).
