[TYPO3-english] How to use ajax on frontend

I am using TYPO3 7.6 and I need to make an ajax call from a frontend page to an extension that I am writing also.  I have found this documentation for the backend:

but will this work for the frontend also?  If not how can I implement ajax on the frontend.
