Another option is to keep your running server clean, don't mess around
with it and launch a separate server with TYPO3 CMS 8.x pre-installed
and ready-to-go.

If you just want to test 8.1 (or any other TYPO3 CMS version) you will
probably shut down the instance after a few hours. A running EC2
instance at AWS costs a few cents per hour:

...or is even free if you are using a very small instance and you're
eligible for the Free Trier:

At this point in time, machine images with TYPO3 CMS 6.2, 7.6 and 8.0
are available and can be launched in less than 5 minutes. TYPO3 CMS 8.1
is already prepared and currently reviewed by AWS (will likely be
released to the public in the next few days).

You can also use 8.0 and simply run the TYPO3 CMS update to 8.1. By the
way: using the TYPO3-on-AWS machine images, you have full "root" access
to the server and administrator privileges to TYPO3 CMS. No limits -
knock yourself out ;-)
