I want to rework this extension for TYPO3 8 (with most probably some
kind of backport to 7, possibly 6.2 as a TER extension). I know, this is
not clear!

pibase is not deprecated at all, we suggest to use Extbase for more
modern way of programming but pibase is not dead and will not be removed
just for fun.
