smoothmigration ist for testing if an upgrade to 6.2 will work... nothing for your usecase

extension first ist the best way, BUT
in your Case you have many individual exxtension (written for this site) ... i think al ej_*
nobody knows what is inside thes extensions
i think better you look for someone to upgrade for you
but i don't think you'll find someone ho will do it for a FIX price
there al so many possibilitys for a non working site after upgrade
and all has to be checked (this is definetly no noBrainer, and the Version is SOOOO old)

in every case
do a working backup in a subdomain (and backup this once mor, so you can switch back to start)
and every you do, do it in this backup system !!!
and then step by step...
