In my view, TYPO3 CMS runs very well on all common Linux-based systems,
as long as they are up-to-date.

My personal preference is Debian GNU/Linux (which is Ubuntu or in fact
the other way round).

Debian 7.x (code name "wheezy") comes with PHP 5.4 out of the box
(perfect for TYPO3 CMS 6.2 hosting). By using the PHP packages from
Dotdeb [1] you can easily update to PHP 5.5 or 5.6. You find a simple
step-by-step tutorial at [2]. It's a five-minute job and you can host
TYPO3 CMS 7.x on Debian 7.x.

Debian 8.x (code name "jessie") is currently in testing phase (but
already "frozen" since November 2014 [3] and very stable). Debian 8
comes
with Apache 2.4, MySQL 5.5 and PHP 5.6, so ideal for TYPO3 CMS 7 :-)

64-bit machine images with TYPO3 CMS 7.x pre-installed and
pre-configured,
based on Debian 8.x are available at Amazon Web Services (AWS) [4].
These
are hardware-assisted virtual machines (HVM), SSD-enabled and offer full
"root" access to the server and full admin in TYPO3.
