sometimes it is more complicated to define a different layout rendering 
for the startpage (which might NOT be inherited to subpages)
on the other side it is more complicated to have content at the url '/' 
and not having a redirect or duplicate content on another page. (SEO 
considerations).
also you may want a menu item in your main menu which leads to the 
startpage.
