I don't think that intervals more often than every 5 minutes are really 
neccessary. Beside your site needs to be available really continously.

Remember: also this pings cause traffic to your server and all servers 
in the routing line and need some resources.

and so you use services from other countries (sweden/uk to portugal(?)) 
the access may be a lot slower than from inside your country and 
timeouts are more propably. Not always because of real timeouts but 
because of so many servers in the routing - especially if you call every 
minute.
maybe you can grace a longer timeout for foreign country requests.
