There are two tasks available for this, both with a slightly different 
functionality.

The first one is to update the index (the FAL records) if changes can 
happen outside the TYPO3 backend. So, if new files are not added in the 
Filelist module, but instead through FTP or in a remote storage then 
this task will check if there are items available which are not present 
in the FAL index and add them.

Because this task does not fill any metadata which you might want to 
use, the second task will update the metadata for changed (new is also a 
change) FAL items.
