Hey there.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough.

I would create a dynamic list of every available file.
This dynamic list can be either created and stored in the file system, or it can just provide inline JS and CSS.
There is no need to skip TYPO3 caching for this list, because it doesn't change a lot.

Hint:
> $GLOBALS['TSFE']-> getPageRenderer()->addJsFooterLibrary('listOfAvailableBackgroundImages', $pathToThatFile, TRUE);

This way the client doesn't need to "read the file system" in any way. The client can just rely on having a complete list provided as inline JS.

Loek, I did some benchies on your script. I use it to load a large bg image on the body tag. Congratz ;-) your script is about 100 to 150ms faster each page refresh compared to the inline typoscript solution. So I gonna tweak it a bit and use it, thanks!

A JS only solution without Ajax or PHP for random images, is not very flexible, client sided javascript cannot read out how many image files there are, and probably you have to use fixed names like bg_X.jpg to X-loop the images.
