The Install Tool should work with problematic extensions. Most of the 
times it reports that a fatal error occurred and offers a test to see 
which extension causes the problem. You can easily disable that 
extension from the Install Tool.

Something that can cause a problem is an Opcode cache. If there is one 
on your system you could try to clear it after switching symlinks.

To show the errors you might need to change settings in your php.ini if 
the configuration doesn't allow error reporting to be switched on inside 
a PHP script.
