[TYPO3-english] log on backend fails

Hi,

I just installed TYPO3 ver 6.1.7 on a server. Installation all went without any problems. CHMOD is set properly for all files and directories. However, when I try to log on backend it fails. There is no error message and no errors in the servers error.log. After a second or two it just returns to log on form. What could possibly be wrong?

ps: a TYPO3 ver 4.7.17 runs without any problems on the same server.
