[TYPO3-english] Select-Boxes in BE

Hi List,
 
I am facing the following issue: I have a list of tags that are related via mm-relation to objects.
 
If a BE-user edits an object, he finds a select-List with tags. He can now tick those tags that belong to the object. That works fine.
 
But it becomes really confusing, if the list of tags becomes very long, say: hundreds of tags. Than the select list will be extremely long and it will be difficult to find the right tags.
 
I have already assigned categories to the tags to group them together. But I don't find a method to show the categories in the select list. 
 
Does anybody have an idea, how to make choosing from a huge number of tags easy for BE-Users?
