I found the solution: Somehow the extension "SR GD Crop & Resize" had been installed. When removing that extension, all looks like a dream. All images is showing up in backend again.

It seems that extension "SR GD Crop & Resize" does not give problems in typo3 6.0, but it does in Typo3 6.2. Then the mystery is solved and everything is in order.
